That’s one heckuva sample.
One name for this kind of metroid is “Omega”, which is what it was called in Metroid 2. It’s got another name in this game, which will show up in the next video, along with the statement that this was a control sample indeed. But, uh, why did the researchers think this thing was safe to keep around? It’s almost totally invincible!
It’s a good thing that the metroids fought here were not modified to be unfreezable, but they’re still not easy to freeze! In Super Metroid, they don’t exactly dodge your shots, and it’s more or less a cakewalk for any individual metroid—and the most you can get on screen at a time is three. Normally, they only appear one at a time, so if you’re cautious, it’s not too hard. The good thing here is that you have a reliable way to remove them, because morph ball bombs worked in Super Metroid, but not very reliably. However, though Screw Attack repels metroids and bombs remove them, you still can’t freeze them if you do those things. They only freeze if you immediately fire a charged shot after Sensemove, and even then only sometimes, so this boss fight is quite frustrating. At least there’s only six total. Once you get going, it just gets easier.
