Game Plans

Sundays:

A set of games I can play while watching the other streamers on the multistream and interacting with chat. Must fit the format of shorter (2-hour) streams.

  • Super Mario (current: Odyssey)

  • Picross S (when I need a break: S2)

  • Power Wash Simulator (between games)

Choice Games:

A set of games I really want to play, whether by express choice or a sense of obligation. Twitch viewers can populate this with a points redemption. Presently, I am finishing series that I started earlier and then gained further access to series entries after finishing the set.

This set is currently on weekdays.

  • The Legend of Zelda (current: Ocarina of Time 3D: Master Quest)

  • Pokemon
  • Wonder Boy
  • Xenoblade (on deck: X Definitive Edition)

Poll Games:

A set of games selected by viewer poll. I try to run entire series before moving to the next.

This set is currently on Saturdays.

  • Final Fantasy (current: Romancing SaGa 2)
  • Metroid (on deck: Zero Mission)

Event Games/Etc.:

Games and other streams voted on by the community for certain events. Most often, this is for annual events such as my Twitch Affiliate anniversary and my streaming anniversary, or as a break between finishing game series. There can be more of these if Twitch subscription milestones are hit.

  • Between Choice series: model building
  • First Saturday monthly: Hollow Knight Randomizer

A LITTLE TOO EASY?

Donkey Kong Land III - https://youtu.be/OjmpxHoV3UY

I knew DKCIII wasn't very hard, but I wasn't expecting to finish DKLIII in a single day.

Donkey Kong Land III continues the pattern of being quite similar to the Country game of the same number, but has a massive departure in level format: it's not the "select a world" setup of Country III. Instead, it's basically the same setup as DKL2. (Side note: I think it's funny how the games don't have a number, then have an Arabic numeral, then have a Roman numeral. It's like they couldn't make up their minds.) However, it still has all the same theming and boss fights of Country III.

Country III was notably not very hard even on my first playthrough: in fact, it was so easy that I found out at the end of the game that I had never saved, when I finally ran out of lives on the second-to-last level. Thankfully, I'd still been doing the same per-level savestates as on this round. Land III, by contrast, took out all the hardest elements of Country III and only had challenge in the fact that it could only display 18 extra lives, so I stopped going out of my way for more. I don't know how many it can actually store, but it's quite a bit more than 18, considering how many losses I had along the way and against K. Rool before they started to visibly drop again.

By "took out all the hardest elements," I mean that this game has got quite a few that were removed. The snowman is on plane with you instead of in the background, making dodging and aiming far easier. Elley doesn't have to recharge. The spider is taken out by jumping on it instead of throwing barrels. Team throws are removed, dropping one of the harder things to pull off to get collectables. K. Rool's boss fight is shorter. And most notably, that level that my chat alluded to, with the purple water that makes you swim backwards… doesn't exist. The fact that these weren't in the game is probably due to hardware limitations. The removal doesn't make the game less fun, but it does make it feel less imaginative. There were other elements for completion that were removed, as well, and it overall just feels like significantly less game than Country III. It's kind of a letdown, honestly.

I did enjoy playing the game, but I don't regret just moving on to Donkey Kong Country Returns HD.
