At least now I know how the inheritance system works.
Okay, so some of my predictions were wrong, such as needing to re-fight the heroes on every generation. Also, it turns out there's another way to need a new emperor: by having your whole party fall in battle. As far as I can tell, there's no way to flee a fight. (I was looking for it on that last turn before the loss.) So I had better do as much training as I can to avoid needing to flee, since I can't. To be fair to the developers, previous entries in the series had a Run button that so rarely worked it may as well not have been there. Taking it away means at least I'm doing something to help my position before I inevitably lose.
I find it kind of funny that I'm thinking about the game this way, but it feels kind of like Pokemon with a different element set. You have 8 physical weapons (including martial arts) and six elements of magic (including dark, which you can't learn but can get as a part of a weapon skill). You're best positioned if you have two weapons and two magic elements per person, and you have a five-member party. Since everything is really customizable per party member (though some members are better-suited to some items over others), and all foes have multiple things they're weak against, this is ultimately the sort of thing that I've liked from Pokemon games as far as mechanics goes. (The story seems… well, rather on-par for Pokemon, too. At least so far. But also, I haven't gotten very far at all.)
On the topic of story, we get into guides. Because for the first three SaGa games, I had a walkthrough pulled up the entire time I was playing. Now, for the first two, this was absolutely required, as you very rarely got any sort of hint on where you were supposed to go. I think the developers just wanted you to wander around until you got where you were going. The third one actually gave decent directions, and I more had the guide pulled up for assurance that I was not missing anything. For this game, I feel no need to look up a guide, unless for some reason I can't abide by not finding all the Mr. S locations or something. (I totally can. The only reason I did that for Lil' Cactus on the Mana games was because I was trying to get the levels necessary to beat the story superboss. So I guess I'll do the same here only for the same reason.) Between the various objective markers and the fact that you can't wander the world map, I think it'll be fine just playing the game at my own pace.
