DID SOMEONE SAY SIDE QUESTS?

And it only took most of the game to get there!
There are 13 chapters. (Square loves putting the number of the FF entry within the game itself.) Chapter 11 is when you finally get to explore. Considering exploration is one of my favorite parts of RPGs, I'm not too big of a fan of this one, but at least when they let me explore, it's a huge area. This is pretty much the entirety of Gaur Plain and Gormott rolled into one, and I haven't even seen half of it, I bet.
I've received information that there are 64 side quests, and I'm going to do my best to do all of them. I'm not unwilling to move on without doing so, but since they're marked on my map when available, I think I'll be okay. I just might have to grind, considering how much trouble they're already giving me at #4. I'm fine with that, too; I haven't done nearly any grinding in the whole game, and I honestly expect to need to do a lot in a given Final Fantasy entry. My encounter counter is looking low.
As for getting all of the achievements, that's almost certainly not happening: you need to obtain every possible item in order to do that, as well as fully upgrade every character on every role. The latter is probably the easier one.
And for the story, well, I certainly didn't see the ending to chapter 9 coming. That was as much a surprise to me as it was to Snow. Since the third game is called "Lightning Returns," I feel like Lightning is probably going to be the one to turn into Ragnarok, but I guess we'll find out when we get there, huh?
