Game Plans

Sundays:

A set of games I can play while watching the other streamers on the multistream and interacting with chat. Must fit the format of shorter (2-hour) streams.

  • Super Mario (current: Odyssey)

  • Picross S (when I need a break: S2)

  • Power Wash Simulator (between games)

Choice Games:

A set of games I really want to play, whether by express choice or a sense of obligation. Twitch viewers can populate this with a points redemption. Presently, I am finishing series that I started earlier and then gained further access to series entries after finishing the set.

This set is currently on weekdays.

  • The Legend of Zelda (current: Ocarina of Time 3D: Master Quest)

  • Pokemon
  • Wonder Boy
  • Xenoblade (on deck: X Definitive Edition)

Poll Games:

A set of games selected by viewer poll. I try to run entire series before moving to the next.

This set is currently on Saturdays.

  • Final Fantasy (current: Romancing SaGa 2)
  • Metroid (on deck: Zero Mission)

Event Games/Etc.:

Games and other streams voted on by the community for certain events. Most often, this is for annual events such as my Twitch Affiliate anniversary and my streaming anniversary, or as a break between finishing game series. There can be more of these if Twitch subscription milestones are hit.

  • Between Choice series: model building
  • First Saturday monthly: Hollow Knight Randomizer

KONG OF THE CLIFFS

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD - https://youtu.be/2CG9MnLOWv8

14, 14, 13, 11. I'm slowing down. Will I get to the end in time?

My bet is on "No," but I also don't know how many levels are left or if any more will take me over half an hour like those last two levels. Level 6-8 was pretty simple, especially for its time attack. Level 6-K was brutal especially with only three hearts. Diddy's hover wouldn't really help but the extra health would have been great. (At least I got plenty of practice on the first round so the time attack was easy.) Level 6-B, meanwhile, has brutal timing for the medals. "Don't mess up or you don't get a medal." The only level that bad for it in Tropical Freeze is the final boss, and missing a cycle in that still got you a bronze! (Also, missing a cycle in that boss loses two minutes, compared to the roughly twenty seconds lost here.)

More or less, this game is just more of the same as you progress through it. There's about one new mechanic per world. For world 6, that mechanic is the tar pits that you see occasionally after the first level. In the first level, the first time I fell in the tar, I couldn't figure out how to clean off DK. The answer is "pound the ground," but I didn't know yet that there was ever a time that you were supposed to land in it, so I thought it was just a lame way to kill him. Basically instant death spikes except not instant, because while covered in tar there's no way to actually continue the level. That's definitely one time that the Tutorial Pig popping up would be helpful. Unlike, you know, him asking if you want to see Super Kong beat the K level after you've only died five times. Five deaths is pitiful compared to the difficulty of those things.

Though the mechanics aren't really anything new as you progress, I only have praise for the visual design. I know this is the HD version, but I don't think it's all that different from what we had on the Wii. Just maybe a little shinier, and obviously the edges are crisper. But the levels are clearly different per world, and I love the aesthetic of the K levels, too: everything clad in gold or bronze, with clearly very expensive materials going into the makeup of things. Prettiest death traps in the world. I wonder who paid for all of it in the game's lore? Meanwhile DK is over here reviving himself with cheap rubber balloons.
